About Us

We are a choir of over 30 ladies, based in Marske, East Cleveland.

Formed in 1987, we are affiliated to the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association (YCA), however you do not have to be a YCA member in order to join our choir. Our founder and first Musical Director was Betty Ord. After Betty retired, Maureen Tanner took over, and in 2001 Caroline Scales became our current Musical Director. Geoff Foxall is our Accompanist.

We perform all over the area, in all sorts of venues. We sing to help raise money for charities, for special events, weddings and we put on our own concerts. At the end of the financial year we donate to local charities. Every Christmas we join with other YCA choirs in singing for the Annual YCA Christmas Service in St. Michael-le-Belfry Church, York.

We practice in Marske Methodist Church Hall on Monday afternoons from 1pm to 2.45pm during term time. We currently have vacancies for a 2nd Soprano. Potential new members can contact Caroline Scales about joining. (Email: cscalesmusic@gmail.com). We do ask that each new member auditions – we try to make this experience as relaxed and friendly as possible. Successful singers are put on a waiting list and when a vacancy arises, we invite the singer along to our practices on a two month trial.

Our repertoire is very varied, and our programmes reflect this. Audiences always say we have “something for everyone”. Songs old and new, classic and modern, music from the shows, sacred and secular – we love variety!

Weddings and Funerals

The White Rose Singers are happy to sing at Weddings and Funerals.

At a Wedding, as well as leading the singing of the hymns, we often sing a selection of about five songs as guests are entering the Church or other venue, and two or three songs during the Signing of the Register.

We have a repertoire list of songs for you to choose from – available to download here.
